In January of 2019 we decided to book our wedding at the beautiful Moon Palace Resort in Ochos Rios, Jamaica! Neither of us have ever been to Jamaica, so we were super excited. We also planned to go to Sandals in Negril the week after for our honeymoon. Fast forward to the beginning of March a year after we began planning and three months before our big day. Rumors of this new-”ish” virus going on in China came about, soon after the virus was in the U.S.

COVID-19 has added another meaning to mommi madness. This blog was initially thought of to help mommies focus on our financial goals through the madness we mommies experience everyday, but in true mommi style, we pivot and we find ways to prioritize and focus on the most important. Although our money goals are important, preparing our families for successes through a possible financial downfall is essential. Here are 4 tips to show you how not to go broke during COVID-19.

By now I think we’ve used this word more in the past week than we will in our lifetimes. Is it just me or are you guys sick of hearing it too? Of course we have to be vigilant during these uncertain times and being careful and cautious are without question the number one priority but unfortunately being confined can often times lead to boredom and restlessness especially when you have children. So I bring to you,

October is breast cancer awareness month and it’s hard to find someone who hasn’t be affected directly or indirectly by this disease. As an ob/gyn I see countless women who present to me for well-woman exams, vaginal discharge, pregnancy and more. However, none stand out in my mind like the patient that presents with a breast lump. When I enter the room I can sense the fear and see the concern in their eyes, before anything is said. They are thinking, do I have cancer?

Colostrum Harvesting or Antenatal Hand Expression is a topic that isn’t talked about as much as it should be. So many moms with high risk pregnancy situations are unaware of how colostrum storing during pregnancy can actually help their babies after they are born. The amazing qualities of our breastmilk are still majorly unnoticed. This plays a part in many hardships breastfeeding moms face; often alone due to the stigmas that affect support, and capitalistic push of formula in situations breast milk could have rectified. If you are diabetic, run the risk of a NICU stay, susceptible to Gestational Diabetes or prenatal genetic testing shows concerns for baby this is definitely vital information for you to have

Then again, if I look a little closer, maybe I look exactly like what depression looks like. In my mind, depression looks like sadness, lethargy, malaise. In my head, depression looks like you stop smiling, you stop looking happy, you stop getting things done. When I think about it, maybe I do look like depression; it’s just that the happy-happy-joy-joy mask that I wear for the world is really freaking good.

1. Are you overwhelmed because you currently have too much on your plate and are not sure where to start to get it all done?

That’ll get your attention! Now that you’re here, let’s talk about a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that most will encounter in their lifetime. This includes women AND men.

I’ve never had an abortion so I can’t say how it feels to be in the position to make that decision. I can say that I’ve counseled hundreds of women who have had abortions. I talk to women daily who cringe when I review their obstetric history and they recount details of previous abortions; I can see the anticipation of judgment in their eyes. I reassure them that it’s not my place to judge their decisions but to help them with their current concerns. So with great certainty, I know that the choice to have an abortion is never easy.

Om is a sacred spiritual incantation that signifies the essence of ultimate reality in Hinduism. I had the opportunity to share sacred space with women of color, from across the nation, at the 4 day OMNOIRE wellness retreat held at Miraval Resort in Tucson. Founder Christina Rice had a vision, in 2017, to create events that focused specifically on women of color, so she set out to curate the dopest experiences with them in mind! No longer did these women have to feel like a fish out of water or a circle in a square hole when it came to self care. From beginning to end, OMNOIRE provides a wellness centered space, the essence of ultimate reality, for today’s woman of color.

Cake, Cake, CAKE…CAKE! (Rihanna Voice) LOL…Noooooow who said that because I was diagnosed with AIDS that I can’t have my mommi, mogul, wifey cake AND eat it too? Well, unfortunately you wouldn’t believe the questions that plague me ever since having my life changing moment to now. From, “Girl! How can you have a baby?”

How could I, with my perfect little career, and “perfect” little family, and perfect little appearance not have it all together? How did I let this happen to ME?

There is a maternal mortality crisis in America and the face of it is black!
According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there are 12.4 deaths for 100,000 live births for white women, compared to 40 deaths per 100,000 live births for black women. But what are some of the factors contributing to this discrepancy?

THERAPY… for reasons unbeknownst to me, there’s this stigma in the black community that the T word is negative. Think about all of the specialist that you see throughout the year. We see OBGYN’s to make sure our vagina’s are GOOD. We see optometrist to insure our vision is clear. And we see a dentist to ensure our teeth are on point. So why don’t we consider the importance of mental health?

I had always heard people talk about postpartum depression, but I’d never heard much about prenatal depression. Like many mothers, I often worried about depression after giving birth that the thought of being depressed while being pregnant was never something I had ever imagined. I knew that whenever God would bless me with a child, I would be the happiest person alive. When it actually happened, that was not the case.

Keeping our baby and this issue of blood a secret, we bled heavily for six additional weeks. To our amazement, the baby’s heartbeat continued to get stronger, and she began to grow. Grateful, I continued to grow in faith by reading scriptures of promise over her. By our 16th week appointment, the bleeding had stopped entirely, and our baby girl was growing and progressing normally.

I’ve never really watched my weight per se. I have always been able to eat clean, with a treat now…

As moms we do not have a lot of (or any) time to ourselves. However, here are a few quick escapes I suggest for your own sanity. Your household can only be at its best when mommy has some semblance of inner peace and happiness.

I was supersizing my waistline, while my self-confidence simultaneously shriveled up and died.
