Hey Mommies and Mommies-To-Be, This is such an exciting time in your life! You’re about to, or just did, the most amazing thing any woman could ever do. We couldn’t be more proud or excited for you but our deepest wish is that you never forget you. You never forget your needs and how important it is fill your cup and center your health, mentally and physically. One of the best ways to do this, is to Move Like a Mother and incorporate fitness into your daily routine.

I know it may sound a little crazy, especially if you aren’t someone who traditionally enjoys working out but hear me out…

If you’re new to our community, in 2020 during the pandemic and most meaningful social justice movement of our time, while searching for inspiration and purpose we launched the Fit Mommi Challenge. It’s a 30-day fitness challenge that we hoped would provide an outlet to our mommies and give them something else to focus on. It was novel and somewhat unconventional but after 1000 mommies signed up and engaged in the challenge we realized it was exactly what we needed! 

Fitness became our conduit to community, accountability, support, love and healing. It was magical and we’ve since realized that is the gift we must continue to give ourselves. 

The journey to motherhood can be filled with some unexpected hurdles. Having a coach, better yet a “Nation”; to help you navigate your way to the finish line, makes advancing to the finish line so much easier.

Benefits of Exercising During Pregnancy

Fitness has a tremendous impact on a person’s capability to have a healthy and safe delivery. While there are many instances in which there are forces beyond our control, maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle throughout pregnancy decreases those risks.

Not only is exercising during pregnancy safe (in most cases), it is usually recommended. Health providers typically recommend that you engage in an active lifestyle before, during, and after pregnancy, but it is critical that you consult your physician before you begin.  According to the American Pregnancy Association there are a plethora of benefits that 30 minutes of exercise provides to both Mommi and baby.

Those benefits include:

  • Reduces backaches, constipation, bloating, and swelling
  • Improves stamina and heart health
  • May help prevent or treat gestational diabetes
  • Reduces the risk of pregnancy and delivery complications
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Increases energy
  • Improves mood
  • Improves posture
  • Promotes muscle tone, strength, and endurance
  • Improves sleep
  • May speed post-delivery recovery

What are other Mommies Saying about Exercise During Pregnancy?!

We recently spoke with one of our favorite Mommies, Katian Henderson who are on two different ends of their recently delivered a healthy baby girl in April 2022 while Nneoma is in her second trimester of her second pregnancy.

Maintaining an active lifestyle prior to pregnancy was always a top priority for Katian. As a fitness enthusiast and instructor, motivation to work out always came naturally. “Working out for me is like brushing my teeth. It’s such a huge part of my daily life. It lifts my spirits in every way, I couldn’t imagine my life without it.”

She maintained her healthy routines all through her pregnancy and credits her uneventful and easy pregnancy to being intentional about always incorporating movement.

However, finding the motivation to work out post-baby hasn’t been as easy.

Struggling with unexpected postpartum depression and having to wait even longer to work out after her C-section has made her life very difficult. “I’ve lost a huge part of me. I don’t fully feel like myself yet.”

“I’m so excited the Fit Mommi Challenge is coming back because I’ve never needed this community more than I do now. I’m also over the moon to learn that Nike is launching this new series, Move Like a Mother Series, I’m gonna be all over that!!”

Rebuilding strength is top priority. The Nike Move Like a Mother NTC program provides workouts that incorporate options for dumbbells or bodyweight. Core stability and hip mobility are essential. Don’t forget your upper body. Carrying the weight of a baby along with a car seat will challenge anybody, no matter their fitness level.

We are extremely excited to incorporate the NTC Nike (M)ove Like a Mother workouts into our Fit Mommi Challenge starting August 15, 2022. As a community we will be your support and accountability as you focus on preparing for one of the most difficult yet rewarding changes in your body and let’s be blunt, your life! Nike has taken the guess work out of it with 12 months of workouts between 5-20 minutes each to improve your mobility and strength. These workouts have been approved by certified trainers and 5 leading pre and postnatal specialist including an OBGYN and Women’s health physical therapist. And we’re doing them together!

Science shows that pregnancy is equivalent to a 40 week marathon which means moms are the ultimate endurance athletes!

From balancing baby carriers, tackling toddler tantrums and juggling juice boxes, we are active in so many ways.
