The question that everyone has asked me?
I think the better question is WHY NOT?
I’ve always liked the idea of doing reality TV for a few reasons. You rarely see Jamaican families or athletes on these platforms and the opportunity to do that and show our culture, my family dynamics, my love and my marriage to a broad audience has always been very appealing.
When I pitched and got the opportunity to do my family show, Glam & Gold, I was so excited but always hated that things didn’t go the way I envisioned. Our sizzle was a great reflection of our family (check it out here) and how we wanted to show up on camera but after the first week of filming, they sent a new producer to join the team, and the show never quite ended up the way I wanted.
I enjoyed and learned a lot from the experience though, and always hoped I would get the opportunity to do it again.
Then I got the call…
I hadn’t even officially moved to Atlanta yet.
Ross and I were still deciding if The A would be out next home and this gave me more reason to think about it.
Why was I in the A?
The call before the call
In 2019 I got the call that Will Packer and Monique Chenault wanted me to audition for a new pop culture magazine show in Atlanta.
It was my dream job but I was scared shitless.
Me?
I love pop culture as much as the next woman but I was no expert.
I had never hosted a show.
I lived in Austin…
But none of that would stop me. The idea that I would be doing something again that made my heart beat out of my chest, the way it did when I stood on the starting line on the track was way more alluring to me than any doubt I had about myself, my experience, or my readiness.
I dove head first into the opportunity, auditioned, and was selected with Julissa Bermudez as the first two women of color to co-host an entertainment news magazine show. It was EPIC!!!!
Originally, we were to film 5 days a week and it was mandatory that we move to Atlanta. Well, as I’m sure you recall, COVID happened and it changed everything.
The show ended up being a weekly show, we had the option to move full time or travel back and forth knowing that we had to become a daily show to survive on Fox.
We had an incredible run. I got to work with the very best. I learned all about what goes into making an entertainment news magazine show, met some incredible people all while honing my skills as a TV host.
Unfortunately, Central Ave wouldn’t get a second full season and I had to decide would I stay in Atlanta or move back to our home in Austin.
Then I got the call
The call after the call
“May I speak to Sanya?”
“This is Sanya.”
“Hi Sanya, I’m Adrian and I’m the casting director for Real Housewives of Atlanta.”
Wait, what?
How’s you get….
“How can I help you?!?”
I was in the process of working with one of my dear friends/ producers on revamping my family show when I got this call.
Would I start from scratch again with my family show or join one of the most popular reality franchises in the world ?
I was so torn
But as a rule of thumb I always say YES to life. Even when I’m a bit unsure or don’t see the full picture, I say yes, then figure the rest out.
And so I started the process of becoming the newest housewife or Atlanta…
It was quite the ride!
